BAREFOOT W ALKING

shoe?
Barefoot workouts are the craze right now, especially among runners. But what about
barefoot walking? “One major benefit of barefoot walking is that it increases
proprioception, which essentially means that your brain is getting messages from the
joints and muscles in the feet,” says Colleen Schwartz, D.P.M., spokesperson for the
California Podiatric Medical Association and foot fitness expert in Pleasanton, California.
“In the end, that could help prevent injury.” Because it can injure weak feet, limit shoeless
strolls to indoors or soft surfaces, and do strengthening exercises for the feet, like Pilates,
yoga, and tai chi, sans shoes. When outdoors, don shoes, especially to prevent injury. If
you’re dying to go bare, try Vibram FiveFingers Barefoot Walking Shoe, which mimics the
feel of barefoot walking but offers protection. Although they haven’t been medically
proven, Schwartz, who’s experimenting with them, says they’re great for beach-walking. ®
